If you would like to learn about the movie download service available at Amzon.com, this interview is for you.

Our guest today is Roy Price who is the Director of Digital Video at Amazon.com. While nearly everyone knows that Amazon.com is one of the biggest sellers of physical DVDs, last year they also launched a service enabling you to buy, or rent, popular recently-released motions pictures as digital downloads. You can even get them via your television from the comfort to your favorite TV-viewing sofa or chair with selected models of TiVo.

Theoretically, Digital Media is the ideal merchandise for online merchants like Amazon.com.

First, it provides the customer instant gratification. There is no delay in waiting for the merchandise to arrive via postal mail. It’s a serious challenge to brick-and-mortar competitors who have traditionally relied upon their physical proximity to the buyer as an advantage to the shipping delay customary with online merchants.

Second, it eliminates inventory hassles. Unlike Blockbuster, the Amazon.com “Unbox” movie store is never out of stock and does not have to finance its inventories.

Third, it sharply reduces delivery costs by using Internet transport instead of physically shipping a DVD.

As broadband ISP speeds improve, Internet delivery of motion pictures is likely to become a big business. Whether Amazon will be the industry leader, or whether it will be Apple or someone else, remains to be seen. But there can be little doubt that Digital Media commerce will become gigantic.

Length: This video interview is about 15 minutes long.
