Summary: If you haven’t yet started a custom website for your business and would like to learn how to select a good contractor and webmaster, this interview is for you.

Subject: Our guest today is Ted Bradley who is the CEO of St. Pete Digital. Ted builds custom websites for small businesses. He also happens to be a championship swimmer and recently set a national record in the 200 meter backstroke. Ted is only a few years out of the Information Technology program at Florida State and thereby seems to be following a characteristic career pattern within the webmaster guild. Phil’s Take:  The small business owner may be puzzled about how to go about finding someone to build his website and manage the technical aspects. He can’t go down the street to Best Buy or Circuit City to find someone. Typically it’s not easy to locate a person with the skills who is affordable to small businesses. The bigger website developers don’t even want small businesses as clients. It’s also hard for small businesses to even define what they’re looking for in website construction and management.

So there are two choices. First, the small business can grow to be big enough to afford expensive website development. Second, it can find an entrepreneur who is commonly a recent college graduate from an IT program. Such people tend to appreciate getting paid for moon-lighting to do the kind of work that they love anyway.

However, young adults must be chosen with care because their business will grow if they are good. Unfortunately, that may lead them to ignore their early clients if later ones will pay more. So, be sure to pay the good entrepreneur promptly, because it will put you at an advantage over the “collect early, pay late” approach sometimes practiced by bigger companies.
