Generating Ad Revenue For Your WiFi Hot Spot
Podcast Audio | Posted by Phil Leigh on August 21, 2007
If you operate a WiFi network and would like to learn how you can generate advertising revenue, this interview is for you.
Our guest today is Kevin McKenzie who is the CEO of JiWire. His company gives users of your WiFi network the option of either (1) paying or (2) watching commercials, in order to gain access and remain connected on your network.
There are probably over 60,000 public WiFi access points in the United States. They are commonly available to laptop users at places like airports, coffee shops, and libraries, among other locations. They make Internet access convenient for workers who spend a lot of time out of the office.
Commonly, users pay a fee for the service (e.g. Starbucks), but some hot-spots are available at no charge (e.g. Panera Bread). WiFi operators who are looking for incremental revenues might want to consider an advertising model as an option.
If the operators choose JiWire, people who log-in will get a start-up page that typically gives them an option to either pay for access or, alternately, agree to view commercials on the start-up page and periodically thereafter throughout the session. Just like access to broadcast radio is underwritten by advertising, JiWire believes that it will be common for WiFi access in the future.
Length: This audio interview is about 20 minutes long.
