How to Boost Computer Sales
Text | Posted by Phil Leigh on January 23, 2009
As computer sales soften with the economy, manufacturers can stimulate demand by fostering the development of the next “Killer App”. In our analysis, such an application is likely to emerge this year as large numbers of consumers start accessing Internet Video at their TVs via laptop computers. Essentially the TV will function as a giant monitor for the laptop and the computer becomes a Media Controller for the TV.Computer makers can encourage the adoption of the Media Controller application in several ways.
First, and foremost, they should include an HDMI socket in all laptops capable of processing video. This simplifies the set-up and enables High Definition video.
Second, they should provide clear instructional videos online showing consumers how to connect the laptop to the flat panel TV. The videos should fully describe the entire process, including dual screen set-up. They should be abundantly available online and not merely at the supplier’s website. For example, each manufacturer should have a YouTube channel.
Third, Blu-ray drives along with HDMI sockets should be provided on top models. This could attract buyers who would otherwise merely purchase a Blu-ray console. Instead they will instead select the better value of the laptop as combination Media Controller and Blu-ray player.
