Our guest today is Rob Greenlee who is the Zune Podcast Programming Lead at Microsoft. Zune is the Microsoft unit that competes with the iPod. Prior to joining Microsoft, Rob was a pioneer in podcasting and webcasting. He started offering MP3 downloads of his radio program, then named Web Talk Guys, eight years ago.
Microsoft wants podcasting to become part of the Zune experience. They’ll even accept the nomenclature. While they’re a distant second to Apple, Microsoft is sensitively aware of the potential for podcasting. Rob sees particular potential in video.
Rob shares some hints about how podcasters can increase our audience. While quality content is the prime factor, Rob feels that there are an ever increasing number of podcasters with good content. Thus, he urges us to use professional-looking cover-art and to work steadily at spreading knowledge about our podcasts across the Internet. He warns that the audience is increasingly less likely to visit our websites, so we must concentrate on viral distribution.
Phil’s Take. While Microsoft is far behind Apple in Podcasting, Rob provides some useful insights. For example, Zune subscibers have a two-to-one preference for video. As portable units such as the iPhone, iTouch, and Zune evolve toward larger screens, we look for portable units to become popular playback devices and to integrate into the television environment. For example, today’s Zune can be used to subscribe to video (even HD) programs and then play them back through a conventional television with the aid of a Microsoft-made adapter.
