If you would like to learn about the trend that some cities may have started toward municipal wireless (WiFi) networks, this interview is for you. (Part 1 of 2).

Our guest today is Craig Settles who is the founder of Successful.com which is a consulting firm that advises organizations on the adoption of new computer and communications technologies. For the past couple of years Craig has been particularly active in advising municipalities on the merits of setting-up city-wide wireless data (WiFi) networks. First cities were wired for telephone networks. Typically the operators were private companies and they were granted a monopoly. Next, they got wired for CATV services. Again, the operators were private companies and they too were granted a monopoly.

Now city-wide wireless data networks are becoming realities in parts of the country, and municipal governments want to insure that the constituents get a fair return for whatever franchise might be granted to private operators this time.  They also want concrete information about how such networks might reduce the cost of government services or improve the performance of such services to the citizens.

In our interview today we learn how such WiFi networks are, in fact, lowering government operating costs and improving service levels. Additionally the networks are providing mobile Internet access to local business and residents.

Length: This video interview is covered in about 18 minutes.
