Inexorable expansion of the Internet results in a lockstep growth in anxiety about threatened obsolescence among incumbent media participants. Yet whatever the changes affecting media, storytelling remains the timeless value.

Even before humanity learned how to record them, the Greek Myths were passed down from generation-to-generation by oral repetition. Itinerate poets travelled around the Eastern Mediterranean retelling the stories of The Iliad and The Odyssey before Homer wrote them down about 3,000 years ago. While the media changed from spoken word to written text, the public appetite for stories was undiminished and may have even accelerated. Read more…

Two Years Ahead of the Record Labels

About two years ago we published a research report entitled Digital Music Goes Mainstream concluding that it was in the best interests of the record label industry to abandon digital rights management (DRMs). You can get a copy of the February 15, 2006 report by clicking on the preceding link. 

Over a year later EMI decided to sell DRM-free tracks, followed by Universal in the autumn, and Warner Music just last month. Finally Business Week reports that Sony-BMG will be the last of the four major labels to throw in the towel sometime during the first quarter of this year.

In our analysis DRM abandonment will benefit the industry for two reasons. Read more…

The For Dummies books are becoming obsolete. Admittedly, titles like Classical Music for Idiots or Greek Mythology for Dummies won’t be affected. However, for titles relating to computers and the Internet a conventional book simply won’t do. Instead a multimedia publication, with embedded instructional videos, is likely to become the future standard. Read more…
