If you would like to learn about the future of broadband video entertainment, this interview is for you. (Part 1 of 2).
Our guest today is Kurt Scherf who is a Vice President and Principal Analyst with Parks Associates.Forecasts of astounding growth for broadband video are sweeping into the press with ever-increasing regularity. One of the principal analysts at market research firm, Parks Associates is going to help us sort things out in a two-part interview.
First he delineates the industry into six categories. We examine each one and discuss the inter-relationships among them, as well as identify the major participating companies.
Parks also shares one of their major conclusions about consumer preference. Specifically, we prefer to rent broadband video programs instead of buying them. Although video sales at Apple’s iTunes store were originally impressive, the growth has sharply leveled-off through June of this year. Whether the new line of iPod Nanos, with their first-ever video capabilities, will change that, remains to be seen. But there are reasons to be doubtful.
The final discussion in this first installment of our two-part interview is about the reaction of the Hollywood studios. In short, the studios are reluctant to go on the record with an advocacy for two reasons.
First, they are focused on trying induce widespread adoption of high definition DVDs in formats such as Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. That way they can retain more pricing control over the consumer. Second, they don’t want to alienate present distribution partners such as Blockbuster, Target, Wal-Mart, BestBuy, and even the broadcasters who pay substantial sums for rights to broadcast recently-released motion pictures.
Length: This video interview is covered in about 16 minutes.
