If you would like to get some insight into what media and Internet usage is like within the student body of a major university, this interview is for you.

Our guest today is Matt Ragas who is a PhD candidate in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida with a student body numbering 51,000. After his Bachelor’s, Matt spent eight years in the business world where he was a successful Internet entrepreneur having authored two books and participating as a co-founder in Raging Bull.com and Indie Research. He fascinates us with tales of how much the Internet and Digital Media has changed the campus experience since his undergraduate years. Phil’s Take. On campus Facebook and YouTube are kings. This is bad for MySpace. YouTube’s leadership is indicative of the habituating popularity of video, but since it has little professional programming, it’s too soon to conclude that professionally produced Internet video websites like hulu will fail to capture mindshare. Oddly, text-messaging, has advanced to a dominating practice from merely being a common one. There’s little reading of national or city newspapers. Aside from the trend toward text messaging, everything Matt tells us makes sense to me.
