Brightcove recently introduced a new version of its Internet video delivery service that is (1) more search-engine-friendly, (2) capable of adjusting the screen images for fluctuating bandwidth, and (3) employing a new user interface.
Our guest today is Adam Berrey who is the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Strategy at Brightcove. His company is a pioneer in Software-as-a-Service for Internet video delivery, propagation, and, tracking. Brightcove clients include National Geographic, CBS News, Discovery Channel, HBO, The Weather Channel, Disney, and Showtime, among others.Earlier this month the company introduced a new (Beta) version that provides two important advances.
First, it will automatically place metadata, such as show notes, on the webpage of posted video. This is important because Google cannot search inside video files and must instead rely upon metadata. Second, the new version will automatically optimize streams for sporadic fluctuations in the bandwidth available on the Internet. The result is that there is less chance that the video will “freeze-up” and re-buffer. Instead it is more likely to just keep playing, although the video quality will degrade momentarily.
Phil’s Take: Brightcove founder Jeremy Allaire is a proven success as a technology entrepreneur having organized the company that created a web development tool called Cold Fusion. He sold it to Macromedia where he was involved in the creation of Flash. Macromedia was later sold to Adobe.
Brightcove is an “industrial strength” version of services like blip.tv. It is well financed by an impressive list of investors including The New York Times and Hearst Corporation, among others. I always like to keep an eye on their latest developments since they can provide clues about the future of “an-Internet-of video”.
