Interviews with Digital Media Thought Leaders
Visual Bookshelf Application For Facebook
Podcast Audio | Posted by Phil Leigh on September 28, 2007
If you would like to learn about a popular Facebook application called “Visual Bookshelf”, this interview is for you.
Our guest today is Edward Frederick who is a Co-Founder of Hungry Machine and the developer of “Visual Bookshelf”. Eddie’s Facebook application permits users to display the books they have read and “see” all of the other users of the app who have also read each book. This interview was enlightening for three reasons.
First, it explained why adding applications to a Facebook profile page is attractive to users. Essentially, it enables them to assemble many of the Web 2.0 applications that they like in a single location. For example, earlier this year I interviewed a company that permits me to create my own Wikis. Its cool, but I forgot the name, and consequently don’t use it. However, if it were a Facebook app, it would be on my screen every time I visited my Facebook profile page.
Second, our guest explains how his company is able to generate advertising revenue from Facebook users once those users “go into the app”. He also explains how Facebook accelerates the growth of his user base.
Third, I like the app because it helps me discover new books to read by inspection of the bookshelves of others that have read some of my books. It also enables me to contact them for more discussion. Finally, the app is not limited to books, but encompasses all the categories at Amazon.com including CDs, DVDs, and Gadgets.
Length: This audio interview is about 19 minutes long.

My daughter told me about your program on Facebbok today and it sounds like exactly the thing I need.
I am looking for a tool like this to use with my CEO peer group. Is there any type of program an individual or small group has acccess to for this same purpose. Is your program available for this and where would I acquire it?
Thanks,
Shawn
